Counselling and Therapy North London

Struggling with intrusive thoughts or difficult feelings can be deeply frustrating and isolating. You may just want this to pass, to become unstuck, clarity or relief. You don't have to face it alone - understanding and support can make all the difference.

I'm an accredited therapist working with individuals who are dealing with anxiety, stress, addiction, depression, trauma, relationship and family issues, bereavement, low self-esteem or confidence, loneliness, ADHD, and more. Whatever brings you here, I am committed to help every step of the way.

Therapy is a collaboration between us, focused on your wants and needs. I will:

  • bring my experience, training, commitment and care.
  • maintain a safe, curious, and validating space.
  • help broaden awareness, unfold experience, lower defences, develop connections and practice tools.
  • try to build the trust and understanding necessary for meaningful change.
  • listen deeply and question gently, with warmth, empathy, and humanity.

My counselling and psychotherapy training was humanistic and integrative, offering a view of multiple approaches, including: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Internal family systems therapy (IFS), Dialectical behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotion-focused therapy and Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

My approach uses person-centred foundations with Gestalt methods and existential values. Our work may include:

  • acceptance and empowerment
  • connection and relationships
  • care and compassion
  • reflection, regulation, and resilience
  • boundaries and goals
  • meaning and beliefs
  • gratitude

Clients have described our work together as life changing, noting my kind, patient, and respectful approach. Clinical supervision, continuing professional development and the expectations of my accredited register support the quality and effectiveness of my practice.

Please schedule a free consultation for us to establish a connection, to discuss your needs and explore any questions. Everything is confidential, with no obligation at any time. Before sessions begin, I'll send a  summary of understanding, answers to frequently asked questions, and some information on my therapy values.

Sessions last 50 minutes and are scheduled weekly, biweekly or occasionally. My rate is £65 for in-person sessions near Kings Cross, or £55 for online or phone.

Your challenges and the solutions to them are as unique as you are - I’m here to help you find them.

Testimonials

Martin is one of the best therapists I’ve ever had, with a calm and respectful approach it’s easy to discuss every topic and leave a session with more clarity and less anxiety. Thoroughly recommend, it’s been so easy so far and one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself! In a short time I’ve made a lot of progress and built a good working relationship with Martin that suits my therapy needs. (C, 6/24)

Martin is kind, and patient. We were able to unpick issues I had buried in my childhood and heal with the present day. I've come away able to communicate how I'm feeling to others more kindly. (G, 4/24)

Really enjoyed my sessions, put me at ease and would thoroughly recommend his services. (R, 4/24)

The work Martin and I did together was life-changing. Everyone around me noticed the difference between where I started and where I am now. I think what was so helpful was his adaptive approach. Mostly, he provided a very safe, empathetic space and asked thoughtful questions and provided validation. I was worried I’d get counselling from someone who was quite robotic and I appreciated that he brings his own personality and subjectivity to our sessions. It made the whole process very human and gratifying. (J, 2/24)

Martin is really kind, thoughtful and patient, and allowed enough time to build trust before jumping into anything heavy. I've found this method has allowed me to process what is happening in my life currently as well as in the past, which means I feel more aware week-to-week in my daily life, and can discuss what crops up openly without feeling a need to follow a strict agenda for the coming session. Martin is a genuinely interested and caring person, and has made me feel confident to share my feelings and experiences without judgement. He has created a welcoming session that I look forward to each week, and I would really recommend him! (C, 2/24)

Martin is welcoming, professional, and passionate about what he does. He was extremely helpful with all information, and accommodating to any requirements I needed before any of our work together, and I’ve felt that has been consistent throughout. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to start or reintroduce themselves to therapy again. (D, 4/24)

Martin takes his time to listen and makes me understand and deal with my feelings in a different perspective. In the space of two months I’ve learnt a lot about my feelings and mental health, and I can’t thank Martin enough. (R, 3/24)

What type of support do you offer?

Therapy is two people in conversation, focused on one’s growth and healing. This process is as unique as each individual. You are the expert on you, my job is to help you to develop this expertise safely, with enough space, support and the tools needed to navigate this.

What methods do you use in therapy?

My training was integrative and humanistic, covering a broad range of counselling and psychotherapy theory, including Gestalt, existential, person-centred, attachment, transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural theories. Additionally, I've developed my own interest in psychodynamic and transpersonal theories.

How do you tailor these to meet individual needs?

My job is to find and use approaches that benefit you, and to build a supportive and empathetic relationship that helps you feel empowered and able to explore your experiences. This is something we'll do collaboratively, and at a pace and rhythm that is comfortable.

What can I expect from a typical therapy session?

Sessions can begin by discussing recent experiences, the thoughts, feelings or behaviours that seem in need of attention. Or with focus on life events may have led you here, or by taking the time to prepare for either of the above. Throughout the session, I’ll listen and will ask questions, providing support or challenge or as needed; to encourage, expression, reflection and self-awareness.

How do you relate to your clients?

A good therapist is someone you trust, can easily talk to, and who is engaged by you - I offer this as best I can, and will regularly ask for feedback and check in on your sense of progress.

What’s your experience been like as a therapist?

This has been a deeply fulfilling experience, a long planned second career, a vocation that allows me to work with people at relational depth towards meaningful change. It’s gratifying work that I genuinely enjoy.

How do you ensure confidentiality and privacy?

Everything that happens within our therapy sessions is strictly confidential, unless there is a chance of significant harm to you or another. I work in accordance with the Code of Ethical Practice from the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society, which requires my work to be supervised professionally. I may discuss some of our work with my supervisor, but the only identifiable details are a client's first name. My notes are anonymised, encrypted and protected by 2-Step Verification. Details are kept in accordance with GDPR regulations and I'm registered with the ICO (ZB652852). For further details, please see my privacy notice.

How long would you expect therapy to last - is it short term/ long term?

I recommend reviewing progress every six sessions, but the duration of therapy varies. Some clients quickly cover ground, and get what they need after a handful of sessions. Other clients take longer, working on difficulties that may be deeper; this can take as long as it needs to. The duration and use of therapy is entirely up to you.

What times would you be available as ideally I'd be looking for sessions after work?

I work online, in person and on the phone, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Please let me know your availability and I'll do my best to find a regular session that works for you.

Most common issues I support people with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Family/relationship issues
  • Trauma

Counselling with empathy and warmth

Working with Martin in Supervision, I was impressed by Martin's ability to attune with his clients, working side by side with them with empathy and warmth, and a natural curiosity that makes him easy to talk to. Thoroughly recommend.

Life-changing

The work Martin and I did together was life-changing. Everyone around me noticed the difference between where I started and where I am now. I think what was so helpful was his adaptive approach — many weeks were free form, which was exactly what I needed, especially because it was an hour where I became truly disconnected from my environment and he helped me connect to myself. That said, he knew when a week needed structuring, e.g. a week looking backwards. Mostly, he provided a very safe, empathetic space and asked thoughtful questions and provided validation.

I feel his personal approach is wonderful — I think he creates a safe environment very quickly, he's very thoughtful with his questions and very thorough about recalling things I’ve said. In that sense, he made me feel very listened to and that goes a long way. I was worried I’d get counselling from someone who was quite robotic and I appreciated that he brings his own personality and subjectivity to our sessions. It made the whole process very human and gratifying.

Kind, thoughtful and patient

I have been working with Martin for the past five weeks and have really enjoyed my therapy sessions so far. Martin is really kind, thoughtful and patient, and allowed enough time to build trust before jumping in to anything heavy. I really enjoy how open the sessions are - I don't feel pressured at all to discuss anything in particular, and sometimes we have just chatted about events that week that have bothered me.
