Pluralistic Counselling Wirral
I am a qualified Pluralistic counsellor and an accredited member of the NCPS. Pluralistic means I believe no single counselling approach will fit every client and every presenting issue - different clients need different approaches at different times. Truly person-centred in outlook, I tailor my approach to each individual client using a variety of therapeutic means and strategies in collaboration and agreement with the client. At the heart of my counselling approach is the belief that every client has it within themselves to become the best and most authentic version of themselves they were meant to be. I help clients be true to their own core values and beliefs, rather than seeking external validation from others as this is where many mental health problems come from.
I provide a safe, protected and confidential environment in which the client can share and work towards resolving their concerns and issues. There is no judgement in our counselling relationship, instead a willingness and compassion on my part to walk with you on your journey towards healing.
I have lived experience of suicide attempts and ideations, depression, anxiety, and late diagnosis of ADHD. I have lived experience of addiction, recovery from addiction, and how to deal with intrusive thoughts, the inner critical voice, and unhelpful and progressively destructive coping patterns.
I work a lot with change in individuals' lives. It is often overlooked that, although change can be positive and lead to more rewarding lives, there is a 'grieving' process that can arise when we are leaving something behind (whether substance or process addictions/dependencies, relationship separations and/or divorce, loss of a job or career, loss of our 'comfort' blankets and coping mechanisms that no longer work). Change involves uncertainty - humans do not generally like uncertainty and this can lead to crippling problems with anxiety.
I also have more experience than I wish I had regarding the loss of a beloved pet - an experience that oftentimes includes 'anticipatory' grief and which can be devastating to the person left behind. The need to simply be listened to during this grief process, especially when the depth and importance of the relationship with the pet is sometimes minimised in our society, is hugely important and therapeutic.
.
I love the flexibility and diversity of the Pluralistic approach. Having the client's informed consent to the strategies being suggested to aid healing and improve wellbeing, helps create a strong relational bond so the client feels they have an ally walking with them, by their side, yet also someone who can challenge them where appropriate. I am quite simply there for you and with you.

Specialisations and Expertises
From my own experience of addiction - where I considered myself functioning well i.e., by keeping a stressful, high-performance career for decades until I suddenly tipped over into being non-functioning, the wheels fell off everything, one after the other, until I lost everybody and everything I valued - I now see addiction and subsequent recovery therefrom as both a blessing and a curse.A curse for obvious reasons and regret about those around me who also suffered as a result of the addiction, but also a blessing. You become much more non-judgemental, more compassionate, more empathic and a 'weller' human being. You find in sustained recovery that life is indeed better and more enjoyable than the chaos and selfishness that comes with any substance or process dependency - and that you can learn how to sit with uncomfortable feelings and experiences without your 'poison' of choice.
Asking for help with any mental health issue (addiction being a brain disease and a mental health issue), is often the bravest thing a person can do. It is reported that only about 10% of people suffering from addictive behaviours ever ask for help - many ultimately die from their addiction. Asking for help is huge, gaining an informed understanding of what is going on with you is crucial - for example, neurodiverse individuals have a significantly increased risk of developing substance dependencies, taking their own lives, and dying earlier than the general population.
Asking for help with mental health issues is crucial - often borne out of despair, it is a supreme act of courage, and can change lives.
Most common issues I support people with:
I specialise in addiction and recovery issues as well as neurodiversity such as ADHD and autism.I am also very experienced in dealing with issues surrounding change, loss and trauma, including abuse, and how early years trauma can manifest negatively in adult life.
