Steve | Person-centred counsellor

Introduction

You don’t need to have it all figured out

You can come in feeling stuck, overwhelmed, unsure, or just tired of things not changing.

You don’t need a plan.

We'll work that out together.

What this work focuses on

This isn’t about talking endlessly or trying to manage symptoms.

It’s about understanding what’s actually happening, so you can respond differently.

Sessions are 60 minutes, focused and structured.

We stay with something long enough for it to make sense, and for you to know what to do next.

No scripts. No performance.

How I work

I’m direct, calm, and grounded.

I don’t sit back while you try to figure everything out on your own.

I’m actively involved,  helping you think clearly, question what’s happening, and see your situation from a different angle.

In sessions, this often looks like:

  • Understanding reactions that don’t make sense
  • spotting what keeps repeating in your life
  • slowing things down when things feel overwhelming
  • seeing where your choices actually are
  • working out the next step you can realistically take

What this helps with

  • anxiety and overthinking
  • self-criticism and feeling stuck
  • relationship difficulties
  • emotional reactions that feel out of proportion
  • repeating situations that don’t seem to change

What you get from sessions

You understand what’s really going on

You feel more in control of yourself

You stop going round the same loops

You gain a clearer sense of direction

You leave with something you can actually use

Sessions

60-minute sessions

In person (St Helens), video, or phone

You can come once, come regularly, or return when needed.

There’s no fixed path.

Couples work (optional)

I also work with couples.

If your situation involves a partner, you can come individually, together, or a mix of both.

Is this right for you?

If you want clarity, honesty, and a way forward, this usually fits well.

You don’t need to be confident, articulate, or “good at therapy.”

You just need to be willing to look at what’s going on.

Starting point

If you’re unsure, start with a free introductory call.

No pressure. No obligation.

Just a simple conversation to see if it feels right.

Online therapy

Online and telephone counselling for couples and individuals.

Video sessions are via Zoom (no account needed) or Phone Call.

Clear process, straightforward communication, long-format sessions when needed.

Qualifications and registrations

Level 4 Diploma in Person-Centred counselling and registered with the BACP.

Private practice since 2017.

Fully insured.

I work in a grounded, respectful way, with a strong emphasis on clarity, agency, and personal responsibility. My approach is shaped by therapy training, couples work, systems thinking, and years of real client conversations.

Specialisations and Expertises

My focus is clarity-led counselling for individuals and couples who feel stuck in repeating patterns.

Most treated issues

  • Communication breakdown (talking in circles, shutting down, escalation, misattunement)

  • Relationship conflict (resentment, blame loops, power struggles, “same row, different day”)

  • Emotional disconnection (distance, coldness, loneliness in the relationship, loss of intimacy)

  • Infidelity & repair (truth, accountability, rebuilding trust, deciding what’s possible)

  • Anxiety & overwhelm (rumination, panic, burnout, relationship uncertainty)

  • Self-esteem & confidence (self-doubt, shame, approval-seeking, fear of being “too much”)

  • Boundaries & people-pleasing (over-functioning, guilt, saying yes when you mean no)

  • Phone and video sessions (UK-wide, calm, direct, long-format when needed)

How the work tends to look
I help you understand what’s actually happening beneath the surface, the pattern, the protection, the trigger points, and the role each person plays in keeping the system stuck. The aim is agency: clear insight that turns into a next step you can act on.

Most common issues I support people with:

  1. Repeating arguments / stuck loops

  2. Communication breakdown & resentment

  3. Trust, betrayal, repair (including infidelity)

  4. Emotional disconnection / intimacy issues

  5. Anxiety, overwhelm, and relationship uncertainty

Steve put me at ease from the very first contact

I was really nervous as I had never had counselling before, but Steve put me at ease from the very first contact. He gave me good advice and made me look at things in a different light that I would not have otherwise thought of. Have recommended to my friends.

I found working with Steve rather enlightening he has a great way of cutting through the crap and getting to the point, I feel he wanted to help rather than keep me coming back longer.

I would be happy to recommend counselling here

I was expecting to feel judged when I told the counsellor about what I was doing to my partner. He was understanding and always made me feel he was on my side and wanted to help me. With his help I could see I was harming myself more than anyone else and this helped me decide what I wanted to do. I would be happy to recommend counselling here. Thanks again Steve.
