Matt | Adults and Young Persons Counsellor

Counselling Brighton

Hi, I’m Matt (he/him), a BACP registered Humanistic Therapist. I offer face to face sessions in Brighton and Hove and also work online and via telephone.
Experiencing difficult feelings and struggling emotionally at times is a natural part of life. I can support you with this by making problems feel smaller and lighter - I will help you explore and understand difficult events and feelings in a safe, non-judgemental space.

I can also help you find practical, tangible solutions to help manage your life that may draw on existing skills and resilience. I offer an initial online session at no cost to you.

Issues around race and LGBTQIA+ and your experience of the world are particularly important to me. Similarly, I can help you connect with your identity if you perhaps feel a little lost.
I believe our therapeutic relationship is important  - you can expect me to be warm, honest and genuine.
A little about me personally would be that I love to travel, enjoy most sports and am a keen runner, having completed 5 marathons. I am an also an avid reader, particularly classic and crime fiction.

If you would like to know more or book an appointment, please send me a message via the send a message - button.

Specialisations and Expertises

The main thing I am trying to do is to help you understand things a little better. I do this by helping you to think differently, and at times challenging your existing behaviours, beliefs and perceptions. I have successfully worked with clients on issues around anxiety, self-worth and not feeling good enough. I did this by helping my clients to both explore difficult feelings, and to see perceived failures and weaknesses as examples of resilience and achievements.

Recently I have worked a lot with clients with an autism diagnosis on issues related to self-acceptance, rigidity of thinking and boundaries.

I have worked with trauma with different clients by helping them see how the trauma effects them now, and also guiding them through past incidents and previously buried feelings.

I have helped clients through work related issues and family problems by being in their corner and helping them see their feelings are absolutely valid. I can also help to change patterns of behaviour.

I am particularly interested in working with issues related to substance misuse, LGBTQIA+, identity, discrimination and race. I also have specialist training in working with young people  aged 13+ . I completed CPD on working with Gender in Counselling in July 2025. My pronouns are he/him.

A little about me personally would be I love music, paricularly hip hop and dance music, most sports, reading classic and historic literature or anything with an international element. I also love to travel - I'm currently nearing 60 countries visited I think. I'm a keen runner as well and have completed 5 marathons, amongst other races, most recently in Paris in April 2025.

Most common issues I support people with:

Self-Worth
Anxiety
Family & Relationship Issues
Self-Harm
Substance Misuse
