Ashley | Existential Psychotherapist
Existential Psychotherapy Hastings
We cannot choose what life throws at us; we can however, with good, educated and experiential wisdom, choose how we respond.Existentialism is the reality of being human and how this reality throws us onto challenging, often perplexing, sometimes terrifying and unstable ground. We battle with finding freedom through personal choice; we struggle sometimes with finding no meaning or purpose in our lives; we negotiate the certainty of being alone by trying to build bridges towards togetherness with others not least our partners and our families. My job is to provide deep understanding of these struggles and to offer a good compass and reliable map to guide you out from your despair, or terror, or rage or loneliness etc.
I have worked in mental health for over twenty-five years and as a psychotherapist since 2002. I love my job and I could not do it without you: it is collaborative work in which I help you rebuild your broken shelters, re-write your narrative which has got stuck like a record in a groove; I work like an archaeologist, bringing into the light old, buried remains that need to be properly looked at. And I work with the body: where is the stress, what does it feel and look like right now for example, let's try these self-soothing, calming responses etc.
Coming to find a therapist is a powerful first step which, despite any despair and defeat you may indeed be feeling is, nonetheless, a dynamic move; so well done for taking this step: I am here.

Online therapy
I work on Zoom, setting up times with you and sending you Zoom invites a few days before the sessions.I have a great [learned] respect for working online. Why? Well firstly it allows you to feel less anxious coming to sessions, certainly at first: it allows you to feel more secure in the safety and comfort of your own home. It also makes it easier to have sessions in the evening or on a Saturday morning as it takes only an hour out of your day. There are also zero travel costs.
We live these days in a world with online connection being taken for granted; and therapy works well as a new norm. Having said this I do also love working in-person and offer this when and wherever I can as alternative; sometimes it is possible to do either or both.
