AnnMarie | Psychodynamic Counsellor

Psychodynamic counselling Tyldesley

I am a qualified psychodynamic counsellor who is available to work with both children and adults. I have a practice based in Tyldesley which has counselling space for adults and a counselling/therapeutic play room for children.

For 25 years I have worked in Education as both a Class Teacher and more recently as a Deputy Head Teacher in Primary and Special Needs Schools. Despite my love for this role, I felt that the time was right for me to take a new direction in my life, and to utilise my knowledge, skills and personality; in becoming a counsellor.

The vast majority of my time has been spent working with children with Special Educational Needs, and their families. Many of my additional qualifications in education relate to understanding and supporting those with neurodiversity, particularly Autism.

Due to my 25 years of working with children in an education setting, I am well versed in how to build relationships and engage with children in the way that is appropriate for them. I have re-trained to learn the skills required to put this experience into a therapeutic setting. As much of my work with children was supporting those with additional needs, I am experienced in understanding different methods of communicating, interacting and working with children with a range of needs, including those with Autistic Spectrum Condition.

My 25 years in schools has also required me to work very closely with adults in a coaching, mentoring and supportive role. Consequently, I have been able to transfer these skills into my therapy practice in order to support others. My ethos as a senior leader was always to support the mental health and wellbeing of all the school community and to provide a listening ear for anyone who required. Consequently, I retrained in order to gain the skills and knowledge required to become a professional counsellor.

My own challenges throughout life brought me to seek counselling at various points, and the opportunity to understand first hand how empowering it can be to access therapy. Consequently, I made the decision to re-train and use my own experiences to support others in their time of challenge and need.

I previously volunteered for a counselling charity, where I worked with both teenagers and adults who were dealing with a range of issues.

Online therapy

I can also offer online therapy for those who are aged 15 and above.  Accessing online is useful for some clients who live further away from my practice, meaning that you can access the service regardless of where you are in the UK.  If you are housebound for any reason, or your work schedule means that online sessions suit you better, then this should not be a barrier to you accessing therapy.

The online sessions are conducted through 'Zoom' and a link will be sent to you to use for the duration of our work together.

If you require a mix of online and face to face appointments, this is also possible.  For example, if you generally attend face to face but are away on business and would still like a session, this is fine.

I offer therapy in

Specialisations

I work based on what is right for you as an individual.  There are no set number of sessions, we work at the pace and longevity that you need.  You are in control of how many sessions you attend and during our work, I will review regularly to ensure that the work is still benefiting you.

Most common issues I support people with:

I can support with a wide range of issues and challenges including:

  • Anxiety or Depression
  • PTSD/CPTSD
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences including childhood trauma and abuse.
  • Confidence and Self Esteem
  • Negotiating changes or challenges in your current life.

This is by no means an exhaustive list and can I support with many challenges that people are facing.  If during our initial assessment session I am not the correct person to support you, I can help to refer you on to someone else.

Psychodynamic counselling aims to support you to understand where your thoughts, feelings and behaviours have come from.  Much of our behaviour is driven by our unconscious mind, we do not know that we do it or why.  However, psychodynamic counselling can help you understand how your past experiences, relationships and and early years have impacted and influenced you in the here and now.  Once this knowledge is concious, it allows you to understand who you are and why.  It also affords you the opportunity to make changes to behaviours or thought patterns, if that is what you want to do.

Fees

Sessions cost £45 each and last 1 hour for adults.  For those 16 and below, the sessions are generally between 40-50 minutes depending on what is right for that young person.

I do offer concession rates to those on low income or students.  Please enquire about this at the time of booking.  Proof of income may be required to utilise concessionary rates.
