Who is there for me?Sometimes we are so busy supporting others that we either forget to take care of ourselves or feel that we aren 't able or don't deserve to ask for help. We might feel that the above question is selfish and that we should just be able to get on with things. I believe that the question, Who is there for me? is a really important and valid question. Think about the last time you were on a plane and you were instructed to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others in the event of emergencies. In order to be there for others emotionally, the principle is no different. We need to feel in control and centred or helping others will very quickly lead to burnout.
Talking Therapies?! How can talking help?
Having others bear witness to our fears and worries can be a very powerful thing. Talking to friends and family can be incredibly valuable and supportive but the difference in talking to a counsellor is the objectivity. Also, we sometimes hold back or censor what we are saying to our loved ones for fear of upsetting them. I will accept you for who you are and meet you where you are. I will not try to offer advice and tell you how you should be feeling or what you should be doing. Rather, I will provide you with a space that is just for you to talk about what is troubling you and offer my reflections which are informed by psychological theories and practices.
Why should I choose you?
Choosing a counsellor is a very personal thing. I believe that the connection between you and your counsellor is key to counselling being effective. I favour working in a visual, creative way often using images, objects and activities to help you to process and make sense of what is going on for you. I draw on different types of therapy to ensure that the work that we do is tailored to you. I treat each of my clients as the individual that they are and encourage them to take control of the way that they want to progress with their counselling.

Online therapy
I believe that online therapy can be an effective medium for counselling but there are things that need to be considered so that the space feels as safe and confidential as it would if working face to face.I use the platform Zoom as this is end to end encrypted and ensures that the counselling space is confidential. I also check in with the client that they are in a safe place where they feel comfortable enough to talk freely. I in turn can guarantee that I am in a confidential space where no one else can hear or interrupt the session.
Once the session time is agreed, I send a link to the Zoom meeting which can be used to sign in at the appropriate time.
I value working in a visual way if this fits in with the client's way of processing. When working online I am able to offer creative ways to use visual resources and techniques to support the work that we do.

Most common issues I support people with:
Depression: Depression is more than just feeling sad. It can be debilitating and can effect our eating and sleeping habits as well as our activity levels. It can leave us feeling isolated from the people that we care about. At its worst, it can include feelings of worthlessness which can lead to self harm and feelings of not wanting to be here anymore. Through talking, exploring patterns of behaviour - both current and historic - and offering skills to challenge negative thinking patterns I work successfully with clients to help them through these feelings.Anxiety: Anxiety often presents itself as intrusive, negative thoughts and can stop us from doing the things that normally bring us joy. Counselling can help us to challenge these thoughts and find ways of managing our feelings.
Grief: Grief is a natural response to loss. For a lot of people, grief is something that they are able to work through on their own with the support of family and friends. For some people, grief can be prolonged and feel insurmountable. This can be for a variety of reasons including the nature of the death of the person and the relationship to the person. When somebody dies this can also bring up other more complex issues which have been masked when the person was alive.
I also believe that grief can relate to other losses in life including a job loss or the break up of a relationship.
Gender Dysphoria: I have supported young people and their families through the charity Mermaids. Gender Dysphoria can be incredibly distressing for the person suffering from this and even more so when those around are struggling to understand.
Young People: I have a lot of experience working with young people. Especially in this age with constant bombardment from social media, young people can find it hard to escape from the things that worry them and often value a safe space to explore what is going on for them.
