Counselling Settle - North Yorkshire

You've taken the first step in searching for support with your difficulties - I recognise how hard this can be, so please read on and see how I can help you to take the next steps forward.

I have worked as a counsellor for several years and enjoy helping people to come to terms with their life challenges. I am a very warm and friendly person, who shows great empathy and understanding towards others. I recognise how difficult it can be to find the courage to face up to your problems and not bury them. It is my job to support you whilst together we shine a light on those difficulties, but more importantly, work out how to put them behind you and move on.

If you would like to know more or book an appointment, please send me a message.

Online therapy

Online therapy can be useful for those who cannot access face to face sessions.

I use Microsoft Teams. We would agree a time/date for our session and then I would send you a link. Once we are connected the sessions work in just the same way as face to face.

The only difference is that I would need to check each time we met whether you are accessing the session from the address you give me during assessment. If not and for your safety, I would need to know your location just in case there is an emergency and I need to alert someone as to your whereabouts.

Just as face to face sessions are conducted in a confidential space, I would encourage you to ensure you are in a similarly confidential space when online and will not be interrupted. This means your full attention can be given to the session.

Specialisations

I have worked in private practice for 6 years and have supported clients with many and varied life challenges. These include anxiety, depression, relationship issues, work problems, health challenges, trauma, OCD, bereavement, retirement.

I worked for 4 years as a volunteer counsellor for the Yorkshire Cancer Support centre and I therefore have a lot of experience supporting people affectied by cancer, including their families.

I am a person centred counsellor, which means that my main role is to help you explore your own issues, feelings and behaviour so that you can come to understand yourself and your situation more easily. Together we will explore why you may have found yourself with the challenges you face, but more importantly we will work together to explore strategies and methods to help you start to overcome those difficulties.

Most importantly I will always treat you with great respect and empathy and in a non-judgemental way. Any information you share will be treated in the strictest confidence, unless there is something I am obliged to share for legal reasons.

I work within the ethical guidelines of The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society.

The number of sessions a client has is first and foremost up to them. I do not dictate how many sessions a client needs and they are free to finish therapy whenever they feel they are ready.  The number of sessions needed will usually depend on the severity of the issue. Some situations can be resolved within 3/4 sessions; others may take longer, but we will have regular reviews to monitor how you feel you are progressing.

Most common issues I support people with:

Anxiety - this is the number 1 issue that people seek support for and is often something experienced by people struggling with other issues, such as bereavement, a relationship breakdown etc. Anxiety issues can include social anxiety, panic attacks, health anxiety etc.

Depression - this ranges from mild situational depression (i.e. caused by a specific situation such as redundancy, divorce etc), to more severe and persistent depression, however with care and support people can learn how to overcome, or at least live more easily with it.

Bereavement - this is a natural process that people go through when someone dies. Counselling can help people explore their feelings and how the bereavement has affected them.

Relationships - these vary from issues with spouses/partners, children, work colleagues, family members and talking to a counsellor can really help to clarify what that relationship is like now and how you would like it to be. Often relationship work can involve looking at assertiveness and self esteem.

Work/career challenges - this could involve going back to work after a career break or illness, career progression, issues with bullying/harrassment, future career plans.
