Adrian | Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist

Introduction

I am a Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist offering therapy for children, adolescents, young adults and families. My work is grounded in a psychoanalytic understanding of emotional development, relationships, and the ways early experiences can shape present difficulties.

People may seek therapy when a child, young person or young adult is struggling with anxiety, low mood, self-esteem, anger, emotional regulation, loss, trauma, relationship difficulties, or developmental concerns such as autism or ADHD. Sometimes the difficulty is clear; at other times parents or young people may simply feel that something has become stuck, hard to understand, or difficult to manage.

Psychotherapy offers a regular and confidential space where thoughts, feelings and experiences can gradually be understood. With children, this may involve play, talking, drawing or other forms of expression. With adolescents and young adults, the work may involve thinking together about feelings, relationships, identity, worries, and patterns that feel hard to change.

I also offer parent consultations and family-focused work where this is helpful. Sometimes direct individual therapy is appropriate; at other times, thinking with parents or carers can support change around the child or young person.

My approach is thoughtful, steady and collaborative. The aim is not simply to remove symptoms quickly, but to understand the underlying emotional meaning of difficulties so that more lasting change can become possible.

Qualifications and registrations

I am a qualified Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and a registered member of the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP). I hold Doctoral-level training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, alongside an MA in Psychoanalytic Observation Studies, and a BSc in Mental Health Nursing.

I have worked in NHS mental health services for many years, including senior clinical and leadership roles with children, young people and families. My professional background includes child and adolescent mental health, looked-after children, developmental and emotional difficulties, parent work, and consultation with professional networks.

My training and practice are grounded in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, with a focus on emotional development, unconscious communication, relationships, play, family dynamics and the impact of early experience.

Specialisations and Expertises

My specialism is psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children, adolescents, young adults and families. I work with emotional, relational and developmental difficulties where feelings, behaviour or relationships may feel difficult to understand or manage.

I often support children and young people with anxiety, low mood, self-esteem difficulties, anger, emotional regulation, trauma, loss, family difficulties, attachment concerns, autism, ADHD and communication differences.

My approach is thoughtful and exploratory. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, the work aims to understand the underlying emotional meaning of difficulties and to support more lasting change. With younger children this may include play and creativity; with adolescents and young adults it may involve talking and thinking together about feelings, relationships, identity and patterns that feel hard to shift.

I also offer parent consultations and family-focused work where this is helpful. Therapy may be short-term assessment-based work, but psychoanalytic psychotherapy is often longer-term, usually requiring regular weekly sessions to allow trust, understanding and emotional development to grow.

Most common issues I support people with:

  1. Anxiety, worries and fears
  2. Low mood, withdrawal and self-esteem difficulties
  3. Anger, emotional regulation and behaviour that feels hard to understand
  4. Relationship, attachment and family difficulties
  5. Developmental concerns, including autism, ADHD and communication differences
