Rachel | Accredited Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) Therapist.

Introduction

I am an accredited Cognitive Analytical Therapy (CAT) therapist with 10 years experience working for the NHS.  Through my practice I have found that clients value CAT as they feel it gets to the route of their difficulties, highlighting patterns of behaviour and ways of relating to themselves and others which often, without them knowing, are adding to their difficulties.

Together we will think about what you can do differently in order for you to feel less stuck, less overwhelmed and more in control.  I often integrate Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) into my work as a CAT therapist as DBT offers really valuable, practical skills, including mindfulness and skills to help when emotions feel unmanagable.

My approach is very compassion-focused and non-judgmental.  I have found through my years of experience that most clients who are struggling have a very harsh inner critic, which often can get in the way of progress.  As such developing a kinder, more compassionate way that clients can relate to themselves is central in the work I do.

I offer face to face and online sessions.  In addition to this I also offer 'Walk and Talk' sessions for those clients who may find therapy too intense and would find it easier being outdoors.

I offer a free 15 minute consulation over the phone if you would like to more.

Online therapy

I use Zoom for clients who prefer online therapy.

Specialisations and Expertises

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), focuses on how past experiences, particularly from childhood, continue to impact us now. Particularly in terms of the patterns of behaviour a person may have developed in order to cope as a child, for example, people pleasing and perfectionism.  We habitually go about life doing what we know best and it is hard to break these patterns on our own and do something differently.

CAT helps to uncover these patterns and then once they are known, with support, you can then feel more confident to do things differently, that will be more helpful.

CAT therapy is usually between 16 to 24 sessions, however it is a flexible therapy and if fewer or more sessions are needed, this can be assessed within the first 4 weeks.

I am also a Dialectical Behaviour Therapist and integrate DBT skills into the work I do. DBT offers practical skills and techniques that are particularly helpful for clients who can feel overwhelmed, anxious and stressed.

Most common issues I support people with:

- I offer 1:1 support to clients who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships, whether this is friendships, romantic partners or very difficult family dynamics.

- I  support clients who are suffering from depression.  I feel that Cognitive Analytic Therapy helps clients to understand the route of their depression which is often developed from early life experiences and the impact that this has had on their self worth.

- I also work with clients who struggle with anxiety, using DBT skills such as mindfulness and supporting them with skills and techniques to promote a feeling of calmness.

- I also have experience working with clients who have a diagnosis of ADHD.
