Counselling Stoke on Trent

Hi I’m Ali, I think of myself as a relationship counsellor because I help individuals who struggle in their relationship with themselves (and often others) and couples who have found that tension and conflict are eroding their connection with each other.

Most of the individuals I work with have painful feelings about themselves. For example: they may not feel ‘good enough’ or feel uncomfortable in their own skin. Or they may not like themselves very much and struggle with self- critical and blaming thoughts which sometimes leave them wishing they could be someone else.  Some of the people I work with also struggle in relationships. They often feel sad, angry, guilty or embarrassed but don’t always know why. They often long to connect but don’t feel enough to be valued or loved by another. Some find that they can’t relax in relationships and spend a lot of time pleasing others or analysing their own behaviour. Or maybe they recognise that perfectionism drives them to always do more or better and leaves them constantly weary and close to the end of themselves.

Whilst these are some of the problems that many of my clients experience in their day to day lives most of them have experienced very painful events or relationships earlier in life which shape their current thinking, feeling and behaviour. Maybe their families were places of anger and aggression, or maybe a parent or partner was a heavy drinker and life was constantly unpredictable; or maybe a parent or other significant adult was unsafe in other ways.

I help people to like themselves and to feel comfortable in their own skin, so that they can relax in their relationships and be braver in being themselves. I do this by helping them to look at the experiences that have shaped them and to come to terms with the pain that lingers. I also help them to identify and reject the painful beliefs which they have learnt about themselves and to find things in themselves to value and celebrate. As we take this journey together people find that they begin to feel more comfortable with themselves. They become more able to identify their own needs and desires and learn how to respond to themselves with compassion. They also find that they begin to build more fulfilling relationships in which they are free to be themselves.

My values and approach

I personally value compassion, justice, respect and integrity, and my counselling practice is shaped by these values. I seek to build safe, collaborative relationships, through which we shape your counselling process together, as we seek the change you desire. I offer a thoughtful and focused approach in which we work purposefully towards your goals, whilst being responsive to your immediate needs from session to session.

Working with me you could expect to experience a calm space; a very human space where there would be appropriate moments of both challenge and humour. You could also expect to experience a counsellor who accepts you unconditionally and responds to you empathetically, someone who values and celebrates the unique richness of both you and your relationships.

If any of this resonates for you and you would like to chat about whether I can help you please do drop me a line.
