Heather | Counsellor (Person-Centred)

Counselling Cranbrook

Hello, my name is Heather, and I am psychotherapist working online and local to Cranbrook in Kent, specialising in working with clients who have been newly diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, or both! I can help you overcome issues stemming from this new discovery, and work through looking back at your past with this new lens so that you can move forward understanding yourself better & know how to use specific tools to navigate life with neurodiversity.

Have you been recently diagnosed with ADHD? Autism? Or both? Or began the path to diagnosis?

It’s likely that if you have then you have a lot of questions about your life, past, present and future that you would like help working through.

Are you finding it hard to process this huge change? Maybe feeling surprised or disbelief? Or like things have suddenly clicked into place?

Looking back at your childhood and suddenly so many things make more sense but have left you feeling upset, angry or confused?

Have you recently become a parent and have struggled with feelings of overwhelm, anger, frustration or upset?

Or had a child diagnosed with something similar and realised, hey, that looks a lot like me?

Are you wondering what this will mean for you now? Is it going to impact your career or education? Relationships?

Unsure about whether this is going to get worse with age? Or what triggers are going to make you feel worse?

Do you want to talk to someone who truly gets what it’s like to get diagnosed later on in life? Someone who has been there and can listen to you with zero judgement or surprise at what you may bring?

If this sounds like some of the things you have been wondering, I would love to help you through this journey. Together, we can work on the feelings that have come up, create plans of how best to work with the issues that you face from this, and learn how to manage your emotions in a way that is helpful and achievable, and most importantly – actually works.

Client testimonials

"Heather is accepting, calming, and patient. As an autistic person with ADHD, my ways of communicating can be chaotic and oftentimes quite overwhelming, but in just a few sessions I have experienced what I feel to be a bit of a personal breakthrough. Working with Heather has contributed to a big change in the way that I feel about some of my important relationships, and breathed new life into my approach to personal therapy.

I have accessed therapy for years, and it had begun to feel a little stagnant, or like I was on some kind of plateau, but Heather's approach and willingness to meet me where I am has allowed for me to come at it from a different angle. I look forward to continuing the work with Heather, and seeing where else this therapeutic relationship might lead me. I couldn't recommend her enough. Great experience."

"I’ve never had therapy before and speaking with Heather has been a great introduction to it, she’s really let me lead on what I want to talk about but also prompted me to think about things I have never considered. We have only had a few sessions and I already feel like it’s benefitted me immensely. Many of the strategies she’s taught me I already have put into place which was the main reason I wanted to start therapy. It makes me really hopeful for where I will be if I pursue therapy over a longer period. Definitely recommend Heather and want to thank her for her help!"

About Me

I am person-centred psychotherapist/counsellor. I have a master’s in Counselling & Psychotherapy as well as a BSc in Psychology with a Counselling Psychology focus and a qualification in working online. I am a member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and the British Psychological Society (BPS). I have been counselling for many years now and started my training in 2015. I have previously volunteered and worked for multiple charities within Worcestershire with both adults & young people/children until recently when I relocated to Kent.

I have previously worked as a counsellor within a local secondary school alongside my private practice helping to support people just like you. I have worked with many different clients with varying reasons for coming to counselling. I am continually striving to develop my practice and knowledge and as such regularly attend training days and events to further my knowledge. I can offer several creative ways of working if this is something you would like to do also, this can be discussed over email or within sessions. I am also happy to work together in person or via video/phone calls.

Why come to counselling?

People seek counselling at many different times in their lives for many different reasons. Counselling can provide you with a safe and confidential space to explore your issues without fear of judgement or consequences within your personal life. Many times, people can feel like they cannot talk to those who are closest to them because of fearing their reactions and the problems this may cause in your relationships.

These feelings can be very overwhelming and can take over all of your thinking capacity, meaning that acknowledging you need help and asking for it can be scary. If you believe that you are ready to look for help, counselling may be a wonderful way for you to work through how you’re feeling. There are many types of counselling and some may work for you and some may not, it’s important to have an idea of what to expect before you work with someone.

The counselling that I provide is an approach called person centred counselling. By working in this way, I have the belief that the client is the one with all of the knowledge of how best to help themselves, as such I will aid you to work through your issues so that this knowledge becomes clear again. I believe that you have the ability to find your own growth and the desire to change your life in the ways which will work best for you. I do this by providing a facilitative therapeutic relationship which is free from judgement.

Counselling is a confidential service, this means that what you share will not be shared outside of the counselling room unless there is a severe risk of serious harm to yourself or others or any crimes are disclosed, this can be discussed further over the phone, email or in person.

About my practice

I work from a calm environment based in Newenden with plenty of free parking available, which is easily accessible to most, sadly there are quite a few stairs that may pose an issue if you use a wheelchair and/or cane although adjustments and aid will be available if this is the case or online/telephone sessions are available. Please be aware that CCTV recording does take place on-site of the property.

An initial, half price introduction session is available at first so that you can have the chance to ask any questions you may have and get a feel of whether I am the right counsellor for you. This session will be in general tend to be shorter so that you can meet me and hear more about what to expect from counselling and myself rather than being thrown straight in, but please do allow for the full hour in your schedule.

If you would like to arrange a first meeting, please send me a message via the send a message - button.

Online therapy

I am more than happy to offer online sessions if this is more beneficial for you! I can offer both video and telephone counselling. I use a platform called Zanda which will send you reminders of our sessions  (both in person and online). On the day of the session, you will get a video link (through zoom) into your inbox which will take you to our session.
