Andrew | Counsellor

Introduction

What would you like to talk about today? It’s a common enough starting point in counselling sessions, but it is rarely a question with an easy answer.
I’m a BACP-accredited counsellor, and I work with people to explore their feelings, thoughts and behaviours to see how they want to respond to challenges in life.
I work with a wide range of clients; the majority are men, and many are LGBT+.

So where shall we start?
People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. Some clients use sessions to make sense of events in their past, the impact on them now, and perhaps to look at where they want to go next.
Others may find they’re living their lives based on old ideas of themselves, perhaps editing themselves to a version that feels palatable to others, but are unsure how to change.
And for some, there might not even be clarity on what is going on for them - but they know something is amiss in their lives or relationships. Depressed feelings, stress and anxious thoughts are often part of the picture too.
Whatever is going on for you, I offer a free half-hour initial appointment to discuss how we could work together.

How I work
The first time I saw a therapist, I was given lots of space and silence to be with my feelings. And that might have been useful for someone else. But for me, I was just left feeling unsure what to say, and was left with a vague sense that I was doing therapy - and emotions - wrong.
When I changed to a new therapist, they gave me more structure and prompts to find my way into my feelings and to talk about what was going on. And, after a while, things started to move for me.
While every client is different, I know my experience is something others suspect they will find in the counselling room. I aim to create a safe environment where clients have enough structure to talk about what is going on for them.

Starting counselling
Starting counselling can be intimidating. It’s very common to think that other people’s problems are more important than yours. It’s something I’m used to working with, and we can take a look at together.
And while some clients are well-versed in working with their emotions, for many others - especially for people who are good at thinking their way through problems - it is unexplored territory.
My job is very often about working with people who aren’t sure where to start, and I’m here to offer a confidential, steady and supportive space to find a way into doing that.

Online therapy

I use Google Meet for all online sessions.

Qualifications and registrations

My core training
I trained for three years at the well-respected Metanoia Institute, and have a diploma and BSc in humanistic counselling, and draw on Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis traditions in order to find the best way to work with you.
I am a BACP-accredited counsellor, meaning I have completed extra work beyond that required just to register with BACP. I am also fully insured and supervised in my work.

Counselling experience
  • I have been seeing clients since 2018, and have been in full-time private practice since 2020. At time of writing I have seen over 170 clients (April 2026).
  • I have also counselled at both MCPS in Ealing and ELOP in Walthamstow.

Continuing development
  • I also make sure to complete regular additional training, with recent CPD covering embodied practice, ADHD and male psychology.
  • I am in training as a senior practitioner in coaching.
  • I have also taken a foundation training in working with couple/relationship issues, gaining a professional certificate in Couple/Relationship Therapy accredited by COSRT at Level 5, but please note I don't work with couples.

Most common issues I support people with:

1. I'm overwhelmed.
Often the first time I meet with a client, they're both really unsure what to say, while also having a lot of detail to impart. Something is up, and they really want to make sense of it, but some of the feelings are elusive. I work with a lot of people who are adept at thinking, but feeling is trickier - and overwhelm is an easy place to end up.

2. I'm not sure what I feel about something in my life.
While this is rarely the starting reason for sessions, it is common for lots of people I work with: what they feel about major issues or people in their lives can be a bit of a mystery. And that's okay! I've worked with lots of people on some of the fundamental building blocks of what they feel, so it becomes less mysterious territory to explore.

3. I know a label like anxiety or depression fits for me - so now what?
The mental health landscape has changed radically in the last couple of decades, and people often arrive at sessions knowing that aspects of terms like anxiety and depression fit for them. But they can be such general labels, it leaves a lot of territory to get to know. What does it look like for you? What are the roots of it? How are you already managing it, and what else do you need to look at next? These are all areas we can get into.

4. The ways I've operated before don't seem to work any more.
Sometimes, a new client arrives in the room exasperated about how something in life isn't working when it used to. Friendships have moved on, a relationship with a partner isn't working as before, or the way the client lives their life just doesn't feel right any more. But what now? There are big questions on why things are as they are, how the client is meeting the challenge, and what they do next.

5. Is what goes on for me normal?
Shame strikes at the heart of lots of what people bring to the therapy room. That spans everything from how they feel about themselves (am I good enough?) to their feelings about how they relate to others (am I too much?), to their ideas about what relationships look like (is how I operate okay?). Counselling is a non-judgemental space to get into all of these thoughts and feelings.

Fees

My standard session fee is £70; I offer a few slots at a lower price, including for therapy students who anticipate a long run of sessions around their training.

I offer a free half-hour introductory appointment, either in-person or online, to see if we would be a good fit to work together.
