Charlotte | Pluralistic Counsellor
Pluralistic Counselling Hadleigh - Ipswich
I'm Charlotte, a qualified counsellor and hypnotherapist from Hadleigh in Suffolk.
Now in my late fifties, I have weathered a variety of experiences! Having been "at the sharp end" for a few years, I am very aware that life doesn't always run smoothly and the challenges with which any one of us can be presented often require some help and support. With over six years of client work behind me, I can offer you such help and support.
Along with my private practice and my work in education, I have spent time as a volunteer counsellor with Iceni Ipswich and I am also a registered counsellor with Anxiety UK. I offer face-to-face therapy from my cosy, calm and comfortable space or online for those who prefer not to travel.
I am trained to practice Pluralistic counselling. This is a humanistic approach that starts from the basis of valuing you as an individual, valuing your idea of positive change, and valuing the multitude of ways available to help you achieve those changes. This means that you and I work together to find the most effective ways to help you. Much of what I do with my clients involves us establishing goals, making decisions and finding solutions. I can present you with different options, but it is you that chooses which to take.
Counselling can be very short-term (six to eight sessions), or medium-term (up to twenty-four sessions). This depends upon the nature of your issue and approaches we have chosen together.
I can give you a safe, empathic and non-judgmental space for you to explore your life and your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. For me, this feels a little like contemplating a large tangle of multi-coloured yarn. Over time, together we can separate the strands into their individual colours, making some sense of past events and gaining some clarity. Counselling can help you to gain a fresh perspective as you focus your thinking onto your own personal resources and start to see a way forward, enabling you to consider alternatives and try things for size. When all is said and done, you are the expert in your own life...my place is to accompany you for a little while on your journey as you discover those strengths within yourself, helping you to achieve your goals and fulfil your potential.
Online therapy
Online therapy can be a great option as it gives you more flexibility in choosing the time and place for your sessions than you might find with face to face therapy. The online platform that I use is Zoom. This is an established, secure platform used by many online therapists.
Online therapy offers certain benefits, but there are also limitations that are worth bearing in mind when deciding whether or not to access your treatment in this way.
Therapy takes place in your own home, meaning that you don’t have to travel. You may find the process of communicating from your own protected safe space very helpful in itself, indeed, some clients say they actually find it easier to talk about some things when they're not in the same room as their therapist (although this may not be the case for you). I may be able to offer you more flexibility online, for example if you have to change location for any reason, you'll still be able to continue with your sessions, as long as you have access to your laptop/PC.
However, not everyone finds this approach practical or helpful so please think about it carefully and talk it through with me by phone or email before you decide to proceed.

Specialisations and Expertises
I am really interested in anger. Anger which has not had the opportunity to be either expressed or heard can, over years become blocked and hidden beneath a layer of other, sometimes multiple difficulties, which may be what bring you to counselling.I don't subscribe to traditional "anger management" attitudes, since these, in my opinion simply serve to further suppress what needs to be communicated. Instead, in a warm, safe, accepting space, I can help you connect with your feelings and process life events.
Problem addictive behaviours can arise as a result of a variety of circumstances, and this is another area in which I enjoy working. My belief is that such difficulties are not a disease, rather that they are my client's response to their life situation. Using a positive approach, we can together find motivations for change and plan a way forward.
Most common issues I support people with:
- Anxiety-related issues.
- Anger-related difficulties.
- Problems around addictive behaviours.
- Self-confidence and self-esteem
- Grief and loss
